Understand the difference

30Squares has two types of games — standard games for exploration, and official trail games designed to drive footfall into venues.

Standard 30Squares Games

These are games created by members and the 30Squares team, designed for fun, exploration and discovering more about a town or area.

  • Created by members and the 30Squares team
  • Built around 30 real outdoor squares
  • Squares must be accessible 24/7
  • Good examples: statues, streets, public landmarks, car parks, seafronts, viewpoints
  • Best for exploring towns and solving clues for fun
  • Not designed around bars or indoor venues

Official Trail / Venue Games

These are created by the 30Squares team and designed to take players into participating venues and attractions within a chosen destination.

  • Created by 30Squares Team only
  • Designed for holiday destinations, pub crawls, town trails and tourism areas
  • Can place squares inside venues and attractions
  • Used to attract players into bars, restaurants, hotels and visitor sites
  • Venues join by taking part in the official game for that area
  • Not publicly created through the normal create-game route

How standard games work

A fun way to get out and about and learn more about your town.

1Create or choose a game

Pick a local area and build 30 clues around outdoor places people can reach any time of day.

2Use 24/7 locations

Squares should be in places like streets, statues, public viewpoints, promenades and other always-accessible spots.

3Solve the clues

Players head out, work out the clue, stand on the square and submit the exact What3Words answer.

4Explore for fun

The aim is simple: get out, discover more about your town, and enjoy the challenge.

Why official trail games are powerful for venues

This is where 30Squares becomes a proper footfall driver.

Players move between venues

Because the official trail is built across an area, players are encouraged to travel from square to square and into participating premises.

Shared promotion

Every venue benefits from being part of the same area-wide game instead of trying to advertise alone.

Only 30 spaces

Each official destination game only has 30 squares, so venues need to secure their place early when a new area launches.

First refusal next year

Venues that take part in a destination game get first refusal when the same area returns the following year.

Example: Pub crawl trail

When we launch an official 30Squares trail with 30 participating venues, each venue will receive 100 beer mats plus an A3 poster, that creates a powerful on-the-ground marketing push across the whole area.

Instead of one business promoting alone, the entire trail works together to drive awareness and footfall. You can also order more Beer Mats at any time.

Who official trail games suit best

Best used in destinations where people are already out exploring.

Bars & Pub Crawls

Ideal for destinations where players can move from venue to venue as part of a larger challenge.

Restaurants & Cafés

Great for busy tourist areas where a venue wants to become one of the must-visit squares in the trail.

Hotels & Resorts

Useful when the destination itself becomes part of the visitor experience and players are exploring nearby squares.

Castles & Attractions

Unlike small bars, larger attractions can also work as self-contained square experiences within their own grounds.

What participating venues receive

Simple physical promotion that helps the trail come alive fast.

100 beer mats

Each venue receives 100 branded 30Squares beer mats to get the game in front of customers already on site.

A3 poster

Each participating venue also receives an A3 poster showing they are officially supporting 30Squares.

Priority for next year

Venues already involved will be offered first refusal when the same game or destination returns the following year.

Standard games are for fun. Official trail games help footfall.

That is the difference. Public creators make outdoor clue games using accessible public squares. 30Squares Team created trail games are the ones that bring people into venues and attractions in a chosen destination.
