Game Rules
Last updated: 25 November 2025
These rules keep 30 Squares safe, fair, and fun for everyone. By playing or creating a game, you agree to follow them.
1) Safety & Accessibility
- Squares must be safely accessible at most times. Do not place squares where access is blocked by tides, locked premises, security gates, or ticketed/private areas.
- No dangerous locations: avoid roads, central reservations, roundabouts, rail tracks, construction sites, riverbanks in flood zones, cliff edges, or any hazardous terrain.
- Public space only unless you have written permission for private land. Respect signage, barriers, opening hours, and staff instructions.
- Consider all players: choose spots that don’t require unsafe climbing, crossing traffic, or trespass. Keep noise low and be respectful of residents and businesses.
2) Exact Positioning (What3Words)
- Stand on the exact square. Never guess from satellite images—map tiles vary (Apple/Google) and can be offset.
- Use the centre point: if the square is a bench, stand in the middle of the bench; if it’s a raised platform or shape, stand at its geometric centre; at a statue, stand in front (unless the clue explicitly directs behind/side).
- Stabilise your reading: wait a few seconds for GPS to settle, then confirm the three-word address before saving.
3) Clue Design & Fair Play
- Clues must lead to the exact spot without requiring unsafe behaviour. Avoid misleading players into unsafe areas.
- Don’t rely on moving/seasonal items (temporary signs, bins, pop-ups). Landmarks should be relatively permanent.
- No restricted or sensitive sites: schools (during school hours), emergency facilities, private gardens, or places that could cause alarm.
4) Weather, Tides & Timing
- Avoid tide-covered, flood-prone, or seasonally closed areas.
- Check opening hours for parks, estates, churchyards, and gardens; the square should be available 24/7.
5) Legal & Content
- Don’t place squares requiring entry fees unless clearly stated in the game description.
- Respect copyright: your photos and text must be your own or properly licensed.
- Privacy: avoid clues that identify private homes/people or invite photographing individuals without consent.
6) Reporting & Moderation
- If a square becomes unsafe, blocked, or inaccurate, contact us so we can update or remove it.
- We may edit, hide, or remove any square that breaches these rules.
